Migrant health and language barriers: Uncovering macro level influences on the implementation of trained interpreters in healthcare settings

There is a knowledge translation gap between policies promoting equitable access to healthcare and person-centred care, the use of untrained interpreters in cross-cultural consultations leading disparities health outcomes. An 11 member inter-sectoral working group met at four workshops discuss agree on levers barriers provision trained settings Ireland. The process was informed by Participatory Learning Action (PLA) research support inter-stakeholder dialogue learning. Normalisation Process Theory (NPT) used as conceptual framework analyse barriers. NPT analysis explored sense-making, engagement enactment found challenges with sense-making senior level service planners, managers governmental offices. This had negative impacts other key actors, including providers, medical students interpreters. also meant that interpreted practice replete barriers, most notably lack resources, training supportive organisational structures. emergent action plan focused improving through awareness raising, designed stimulate series complementary for implementation. Combining PLA provided new insights into macro influences implementation work national system. approaches this study are applicable fields.
